The Smashing Pumpkins were my favorite band from junior high all the way up through college. When they brought Jimmy back in 1999, they did a handful of shows called The Arising! tour, the first of which was on April 10th in Detroit at Saint Andrew’s Hall. The place only held about a thousand people. I stood outside a Harmony House for a couple of hours with a buddy’s mom and sister to try and get tickets. At that time, they had just started to implement the lottery system for tickets instead of first-come, first-served. Luckily, we ended up being 3rd in line after the lottery. The store had two computers for printing tickets, and, once they went on sale, the clerks would just ask how many tickets you wanted and try to complete the transaction as quickly as possible. After the first person finished, we walked up to the counter and asked for four tickets. Once they printed our tickets and took one more order after us, they were sold out. What a score! To this day, this still ranks as the best show I’ve ever been to.
