My first introduction to Herbie Hancock’s music was by a gentleman named Mr. Wojciechowski, my old high school jazz band teacher. I believe it was my junior year when he wrote an arrangement of “Maiden Voyage” for us to play. There were always two drummers in jazz band and we would typically trade off songs, though the more senior of the two usually got their pick of the litter. Unfortunately for me, the senior drummer at the time chose to play this song. However, the exposure to “Maiden Voyage” was enough to get me interested in exploring Herbie Hancock’s catalog further, which eventually led to me picking today’s song as my senior solo.
