Primus played the State Theatre in Detroit in 2003 and this was the first time I saw them live. I went with a few friends from college and my girlfriend at the time. I was definitely geeked for the show, not only because it was my first time seeing them, but because they were scheduled to play their album Sailing The Seas Of Cheese in its entirety. We all had main floor general admission tickets, and it didn’t take long for the place to erupt into a sea of bodies flowing every which way. After only a few songs, I had completely lost my companions and was content with simply finding them all when the show ended. When the lights finally came up, I found my buddies, but my girlfriend was nowhere to be found. As we made our way to the lobby, I finally saw her near the front doors and could tell she had been crying. When I asked her what happened, she had a whole story about how security had asked her to move from an area she was standing in during the show, which she refused to do multiple times, before they eventually kicked her out and onto the street. This was in November in Michigan mind you with her wearing thigh-high stockings, a skirt, and short sleeves. Not exactly the warmest clothing on what I remember as a pretty chilly night. Thankfully, one of the doormen had at least let her back into the lobby after seeing her outside for about 20 or 30 minutes. Ah, memories.
