89X was one of the radio stations most of my friends and I listened to growing up. At that time, they were an alternative rock station broadcasting throughout Detroit from Windsor, Ontario, Canada. Every so often, they would put on what they called an “89X show,” which was a concert where tickets only costed $8.90 (plus the obligatory Ticketmaster surcharge, of course). There was only one 89X show I ever ended up buying tickets for and that was the Sneaker Pimps. This was not long after the band released their debut album, Becoming X. I liked that record quite a bit and was really looking forward to going to the show. About a week before the event, however, the radio station announced that the show was canceled. When I went to Ticketmaster to get the refund, I asked them if they knew why it was canceled. “Lack of ticket sales” was the unfortunate reply. What a bummer.
