When you use an analog tape machine, you need to make various adjustments to achieve proper playback. This is typically done with project tones, a series of tones recorded to tape that can be played back on any machine so that the levels can be adjusted to the same settings as the original machine that recorded the tape(s). This allows the audio to sound relatively uniform, regardless of where the tapes are played back. For a majority of the projects I work on, there is one, maybe two, tone sets for an entire album. For the album When Disaster Strikes, however, there were about seven or eight.
