After about a year or two of drum lessons, my teacher wanted me to pick a song and write out the drum part. He gave me free reign to pick any song I wanted, and I was excited for the assignment. Up until then, I had mostly worked on the rudiments and various exercises from two books, Progressive Steps To Syncopation For The Modern Drummer by Ted Reed and The Updated Realistic Rock Drum Method by Carmine Appice. I would sometimes play to songs when I practiced of course, but this was the first time I was tasked with writing out a full part on staff paper. I was really starting to get into the U2 album The Joshua Tree around this time and ultimately ended up picking a song from that record.
