Towards the end of high school and continuing into college, I started to read various books about different religions around the world. Buddhism was one that really piqued my interest quite a bit, and my uncle and I would attend a meditation session at a local Buddhist temple every once and a while. One year for my birthday, my uncle gifted me a folder of sheet music signed by Philip Glass, a piece he specifically wrote for the founder of the temple we attended. Philip Glass’ music typically contains cyclical patterns that slowly get built upon over the course of the composition. When a friend of mine turned me on to the band Battles and their record Mirrored, the music reminded me very much of Glass’ work.
