Napster came out the same year I started college, 1999. It was already astonishing enough to go from a dial-up Internet connection at home to a T1 connection on campus, but now there was this program that allowed music to be shared so easily amongst its users. Many of us looked at it as an almost modernized cassette tape, giving people the ability to make a copy of a record they owned and sharing it digitally with others. One of the first digital music files I remember having was by a band called The Lovin’ Spoonful.
