My family had an on-again, off-again relationship with going to church on Sundays when I was growing up. Sometimes we’d go every Sunday for a few months straight, go sporadically for another couple of months, and then not go at all for while. Regardless of our frequency or infrequency of attendance, my parents made it clear that I was expected to make my First Communion, which I did when I was probably around eight years old. After the ceremony, my parents threw a big party at a local banquet hall, a fond memory I can still picture vividly to this day. Towards the end of the night, my dad and a buddy of his played acoustic guitars and sang songs to the crowd, one of which was “Act Naturally” by Buck Owens.
