I moved to California from Michigan back in 2005, driving out west with my buddy Brian the week after I graduated from college. I had another friend, George, who was going to San Diego State University at the time and allowed me to crash on his crouch while I tried to get my footing. It wasn’t until the following year that I actually managed to make my way to Los Angeles, returning to school in Hollywood to study audio engineering. Within the first week of school, I saw an advertisement for Les Claypool playing a place called the Avalon later that month, a show that I had no intention of missing. Because everything was in close proximity, all I had to do was go to class, drop off my backpack at the car, walk to the venue, buy a ticket at the window for $25, and rock out the rest of the night.
