Junior high was probably the first time I really played any kind of percussion instrument besides snare drum or bass drum in school. In most cases, you still wanted to play snare or bass drum, simply because there tended to be more to play during the song, but it was fun to learn the intricacies of those other instruments. I don’t know why we had them because we never used them in a song, but we had a pair of castanets that I would play around with every once in a while. This song by The Ronettes was really the only song I knew at the time with castanets and acted as my blueprint for a proper sound when I played them.
