Having continued through the Iggy Pop biography I previously mentioned, I’m now at the point where the band has formed under the moniker The Psychedelic Stooges, regularly booking gigs at the Grande Ballroom in Detroit. It was during one particular performance at this venue, opening up for the band Cream, that Pop embraced a new persona that would be a staple of future performances, one that was, in his words, “the guy you love to hate.” Experiencing equipment issues that stirred the crowd into a frenzy of “we want the Cream” chants, Iggy confronted the crowd, becoming a lightning rod for their increasingly aggressive displeasure. After getting their equipment back online, a bad performance ensued, and I’m sure the crowd was absolutely elated when Cream finally took the stage.
