During the NFL game last night, one of the quarterbacks took a bad hit that had him leaving the game on a stretcher. Thankfully, it appears that he will be OK, but it reminded me of a Lions’ game I watched as a kid in 1991. One of our offensive linemen, a gentleman named Mike Utley, was carried out on a stretcher after suffering a neck injury that ended up leaving him paralyzed. As they took him off the field, he managed to give a thumbs up sign to everyone, a moment that became a rallying cry for the rest of the season. That moment and that year is one that has been engrained in my mind ever since.
