I’m typically not the kind of person that will randomly go to a show and see a band I don’t know or am only vaguely familiar with. There have been a few times, however, when a friend has wanted to see someone they like, asked me to come along, and I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the show. Such was the case in 2008 when Mark Knopfler, formerly of the band Dire Straits, came to play The Greek Theatre in Los Angeles. I had a buddy who was a big fan, particularly of Knopfler’s playing style, and wanted to go to the show. I only knew about three or four Dire Straits songs, really just the stuff I’d heard on the radio or MTV through the years, and not a lick of his solo stuff. It didn’t matter though. His playing was so on point that even a novice like me was entertained the whole night.
