One year as a gift I received a book called The White Book by a gentleman named Ken Mansfield, who worked for Capitol Records, and later the U.S. division of Apple Records, as The Beatles came to prominence. Obviously, based on the book’s title, many of the stories he shares are Beatles related, but there are plenty of tales about other artists he worked with, one of which was Brian Wilson. In the book, Mansfield mentions an encounter with Wilson where the artist had visited him to share the latest Beach Boys single they had recorded. After Wilson had played the record for Mansfield, Ken expressed his reservations to Wilson about releasing the song. Wilson got up silently, grabbed the record off the player, turned to Mansfield while exiting and simply said, “This is our next single.” Love that story.
