My mom grew up in Hamtramck, MI, a city that had a large Polish contingent for most of my childhood. Every Labor Day weekend, Hamtramck would have a Polish festival that spanned many blocks along one of the main drags, Joseph Campau Ave., and my family would always gather for the weekend at my maternal grandparents’ house, who lived just up one of the side streets from the festivities. The polka band my dad was in would typically play one of the days, and it was a blast to get out on the dance floor with my mom, aunt, or sister for a few tunes. One song they played that I was always partial to was “Everybody Polka” by Eddie Blazonczyk’s Versatones.
