My buddy Dennis is full of great stories, but this is one of my favorites. Before heading to Louisiana for a temporary work assignment, Dennis’ sister tried, to no avail, to get him to attend a show at one of the local music venues. She had a great time and was sure to let him know as such prior to him leaving, saying he must see this singer when he got back to L.A. Upon returning to California and getting a new apartment after about a year in Louisiana, Dennis had his sister over to see his new place. While chatting in his living room, Dennis received a knock at his door, which turned out to be his neighbor from across the hall. Dennis introduced his sister and could immediate tell by the look on her face that something was up. After his neighbor departed shortly thereafter, his sister looked at him and said, “That’s him!” “Yeah, that’s my neighbor Al,” Dennis replied. “No, that’s the guy I was telling you about before you left. That’s the singer!” she said. “Al’s a singer?” Dennis said curiously. At that moment, right on queue, they heard Al doing vocal warmups in his apartment across the way. “Huh, I guess Al is a singer,” Dennis said. That Al was Al Jarreau.
